Two Owls, created by in 1921, epitomizes the mastery of graphic art within the Art Nouveau movement. With precise lines and a keen eye for detail, de Graag captures the essence of these nocturnal birds in a stylized yet lifelike manner. The print showcases her technical skill and ability to convey emotion through form and composition. The use of strong contrast and the omission of superfluous details creates a powerful image. While the piece reflects elements of abstraction, it maintains a connection to naturalistic representation, reminiscent of her contemporary, sculptor Joseph Mendes da Costa. The work stands as a testament to de Graag's artistic versatility and her significant contribution to the visual arts of her time.
Why We Picked it
de Graag used the end grain of the wood. Because of the hardness an end grain wood produces much finer printings. The minimalist art print captures the essence of these nocturnal creatures with striking precision and a compelling balance of stylized and realistic elements. By supporting this artwork, you're contributing to vital bird conservation efforts and honoring the memory of a remarkable creature.
About the Artist
Julie de Graag (1877–1924) was a Dutch graphic artist and painter associated with the Art Nouveau movement. Known for her detailed and precise work, she specialized in woodcuts, linocuts, and illustrations, often depicting animals, plants, and simple rural scenes with a strong sense of design and contrast. Her work is characterized by clean lines and a refined simplicity, reflecting the influence of the Dutch Arts and Crafts movement. Despite her talent, de Graag struggled with mental health issues and sadly ended her life in 1924.
