Luxe vs. Classic Prints

Luxe Prints – Premium prints on a variety of high-end fine art paper options and frames for a sophisticated presentation. Some fit standard frames, while others maintain non-standard historical proportions.

Classic Prints – Affordable, high-quality prints with a smoother finish for sharp detail designed to fit off-the-shelf frames. Classic prints have the word 'classic' above the title and a letter which shows the sizes that the print comes in. Size A– 4x6", 12x18", 16x24", 20x30" B– 6x8", 9x12", 12x16", 18x24", 24x30" C– 8x10", 16x20"

Understanding Our Print Sizes

Historical prints vary in proportion based on their original format. Whenever possible, we match them to the closest standard size, using common print ratios like 2:3 (e.g., 8x12) or 3:4 (e.g., 9x12). However, resizing some prints can distort the artwork's integrity, so we can only offer them in their original proportions. Additionally, we use different printers for our product lines, and not all sizes are available with every printer.

The print captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Oneida Community, Ltd. In 1902, the company launched "Community Plate," a new line of silver-plated products. This collection included not only high-quality silver-plated flatware but also hollowware like tea sets and serving dishes. The innovative advertising campaign that accompanied targeted upscale magazines and it prominently featured stylish women, connecting the elegance of the products to contemporary notions of sophistication and lifestyle. This marketing strategy was groundbreaking for its time, positioning "Community Plate" as a desirable choice for modern households.

Why We Picked It
The artwork exudes sophistication and elegance, with its depiction of a woman seated gracefully amidst opulent surroundings. Her emerald-green dress, meticulously rendered with intricate details, such as the gilt frame projects an association of glamor, refined taste and luxury.

The print features the fadeaway technique invented by Clarence Coles Phillip where figures blend seamlessly into the background, creating a visually striking effect. The print also uses a split-complementary color scheme, a technique that involves selecting a base color and then using the two colors adjacent to its complementary color.
The use of contrasting elements, such as light and dark, soft and sharp lines, creates visual interest and adds layers of complexity to the artwork. And lastly the unique style and distinctive aesthetic set it apart, making it stand out as a memorable piece among other advertising at the time.

Notable Context
The Oneida Community was originally a utopian religious commune founded in 1848 in Oneida, New York. It evolved into a successful joint-stock company known for its high-quality silverware, reflecting a transition from communal living to industrial enterprise. When Oneida launched "Community Plate," a line of silver-plated flatware and hollowware, they expanded their product offerings and positioned the company as a leader in quality tableware, appealing to both the middle and upper classes.

During the early 20th century, the United States experienced rapid urbanization, leading to changes in social customs and domestic life. As middle-class prosperity increased, there emerged a growing desire for refined and stylish home furnishings, including tableware and dining accessories.

About The Artist
Clarence Coles Phillips, often known simply as Coles Phillips, was an American illustrator and artist best known for his unique "fadeaway" style. Born in 1880, he gained popularity in the early 20th century for his illustrations in magazines like "Life," where his innovative technique involved fading the edges of his subjects into the background, creating a seamless transition. This style, particularly with women in fashion, became his trademark and was widely admired.
