Luxe vs. Classic Prints
Luxe Prints – Premium prints on a variety of high-end fine art paper options and frames for a sophisticated presentation. Some fit standard frames, while others maintain non-standard historical proportions.
Classic Prints – Affordable, high-quality prints with a smoother finish for sharp detail designed to fit off-the-shelf frames. Classic prints have the word 'classic' above the title and a letter which shows the sizes that the print comes in. Size A– 4x6", 12x18", 16x24", 20x30" B– 6x8", 9x12", 12x16", 18x24", 24x30" C– 8x10", 16x20"
Understanding Our Print Sizes
Understanding Our Print Sizes
Historical prints vary in proportion based on their original format. Whenever possible, we match them to the closest standard size, using common print ratios like 2:3 (e.g., 8x12) or 3:4 (e.g., 9x12). However, resizing some prints can distort the artwork's integrity, so we can only offer them in their original proportions. Additionally, we use different printers for our product lines, and not all sizes are available with every printer.
Cawnpore (now Kanpur) on the Ganges was featured as a supplement in The Illustrated London News on November 28, 1857. The artist, William Carpenter spent seven years traversing India documenting its landscapes and bustling scenes through his detailed and evocative paintings. His works provide a vivid glimpse into the life and environment of India during the British Colonial Era.
Why We Picked It
The artwork is thoughtfully structured, balancing detailed foreground elements—such as the figures and architecture—with the expansive background of the Ganges River. This layering creates depth and invites exploration of the scene. Color further enhances its appeal; warm earth tones combined with vibrant blues and greens evoke the natural beauty of the Indian landscape. Carpenter's meticulous attention to light and shadow adds a sense of realism, capturing the dynamic interplay between the bustling life along the river and the serene flow of the water.
Notable Context
The year 1857 was pivotal in Indian history due to the Indian Rebellion, where Cawnpore was a focal point. Cawnpore was besieged by forces for about three weeks, ending in the Cawnpore Massacre, where many British were ambushed and killed. In response, the British soldiers tortured and hanged thousands of Indians, including many innocent civilians.
About the Artist
William Carpenter was the son of the Unitarian minister and educational reformer Dr. William Benjamin Carpenter. Trained as a painter, he exhibited his works at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. During his travels in India from 1850 to 1857, Carpenter produced a substantial body of work, documenting not only landscapes and cityscapes but also the daily lives and customs of the people. His art provides a unique blend of documentary realism and artistic expression, making his works significant both as historical records and as pieces of fine art.
Cawnpore (now Kanpur) was a significant location in mid-19th century India. Cawnpore's strategic importance stemmed from its position as a major crossing point on the Ganges and as a critical junction where the Grand Trunk Road intersected with the road from Jhansi to Lucknow. Cawnpore was a modern town and one of the key military stations in the Allahabad province.
Cawnpore was known for its fertile gardens and agriculture. The local bazaars thrived with an array of goods, especially leather and various textiles, catering to both native and European populations. The presence of numerous well-stocked European shops highlighted the town's colonial influence and its role as a commercial hub.
