Understanding Our Print Sizes
Understanding Our Print Sizes
Historical prints vary in proportion based on their original format. Whenever possible, we match them to the closest standard size, using common print ratios like 2:3 (e.g., 8x12) or 3:4 (e.g., 9x12). However, resizing some prints can distort the artwork's integrity, so we can only offer them in their original proportions. Additionally, we use different printers for our product lines, and not all sizes are available with every printer.
Created in April 1863, the woodcut titled Maisaka (舞阪) beautifully captures vividly depicts a boat on a river, seemingly amidst a festive scene. The masterful use of color and intricate details brings to life the serene yet bustling atmosphere of Maisaka. This color woodblock print a renowned Japanese artist from the late Edo period, is part of the celebrated series Famous Places on the Tōkaidō.
Why We Picked It
The print highlights the natural beauty of the landscape and bustling human activity characteristic of this coastal area. The vibrant hues and careful composition reflect an innovative approach to woodblock printing, making this work a significant representation of 19th-century Japanese art and culture.
Notable Context
April is a significant month in Japan as it marks the arrival of spring. During this time, numerous festivals and celebrations take place, many of which are centered around water bodies. These festivities often include boat processions and other water-related activities. One of the most prominent events in April is hanami, the traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of cherry blossoms. Many people gather near rivers and lakes where cherry blossoms are in full bloom, often participating in festive activities such as boat rides.
Maisaka was the 30th station along the historic Tōkaidō road, which connected the political center Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with the imperial capital of Kyoto. This route was famously depicted in various ukiyo-e prints by renowned artists, including the celebrated series "Famous Places on the Tōkaidō."
Maisaka was situated near the southern shore of Lake Hamana in what is now Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It was a bustling port town, benefiting from its strategic location by the water. Travelers and merchants would often stop here to rest, trade, and prepare for the onward journey. During the Edo period, Maisaka flourished as a hub of economic activity. The town's location by Lake Hamana made it a center for fishing and trade, with local markets offering a variety of goods, including seafood and agricultural products. The vibrant atmosphere of the port and the frequent comings and goings of travelers contributed to the town's dynamic cultural life.
